Latest World Cup News

Argentina have called off their controversial friendly with Israel following more violence in Gaza. The Guardian have released a guide to ALL 736 players taking part at the World Cup, its pretty exhaustive reading!

An In-depth look at the Golden Boot Betting

Pinnacle have also released this handy guide to the Top Goalscorer markets for the World Cup. For those short on time, I've surmised the key points below:

  • No player has been top goalscorer TWICE at the World Cup – ruling out Thomas Muller and James Rodriguez
  • Going deep in the tournament – 7 of 10 have played the maximum number of games (Final or 3rd PPO)
    • Only Oleg Salenko (USA 94) has won the golden boot without leaving the group stages. Largely down to scoring 5 against Cameroon
  • Neymar looks an obvious candidate – but it's worth noting that Gabriel Jesus outscored him in the qualifiers with 7 goals (saver bet potential)
  • Messi is an obvious market leader but a supporting cast is important and what goes against Messi is the likelihood that Argentina will rely on him as a creator and goal scorer
  • Kane has hit 20+ three seasons in a row and is likely to be the figure point for England – only doubt is whether England can go deep enough in the tournament
  • A German has won the golden boot in three of the last four tournaments

The Outsiders – in one of the most open tournaments in recent memory, with all the market leaders having solid chances, it opens up the potential to look further down the goal scorer lists for potential outsider bets

  • Germany as the holders and one of the favourites are likely to go deep in the tournament, and one man catches the eye here – RB Leipzig goal machine, Timo Werner
  • Other notable outsiders include Hazard, Isco, Lewandowski and Cavani

Today's Pre-World Cup International Friendlies

After suffering their largest ever defeat, the Czechs play host to another World Cup hopeful in Nigeria. On the one hand, you would hope for a response from the Czech's after that embarrassment, but on the other you'd really have to question their current motivation levels and siding with the Nigerian's here seems to be the smarter move.

Norway have already beaten one World Cup hopeful this week (3-2 v Iceland) and now they welcome England's group fellows, Panama. I would not rule out another win for the Norwegians here, but perhaps a draw is the more likely outcome.

In Brussels, Belgium welcome Egypt who will again be missing their talisman Salah. Belgium are undefeated in 10 games and put in a solid performance against Portugal, despite the game ending 0-0. A Belgium win to nil looks the most likely outcome here, even without the, yet again, injured Kompany.
