Wolves vs Man United

Molineux

Saturday 16th March

Kick-off: 19:55

Key stats:

– Man United won 5-0 on their last trip to the Molineux – in 2012

– These sides shared a 1-1 draw, back in September at Old Trafford

– Man United lost their first away match under Solskjaer last weekend at Arsenal

– Wolves are unbeaten in their last six home matches, winning five

– Wolves have beaten Chelsea and Liverpool at home this season

– Man United have beaten Arsenal and Chelsea away in the FA Cup so far

Analysis:

It was sort of inevitable. After the highs of Paris, came the lows of London for Ole’s Red Devils, as Arsenal gained a vital three points against United in the race for the top four. Before that, Solskjaer had won every away fixture since his return to Old Trafford. It’s by no means a disaster, but how they react this weekend against a competent and competitive Wolves side will speak volumes of their character.

United recent run in the FA Cup has been very positive. Their narrow loss in last year’s final has been followed by wins this campaign against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea on away turf; a trip to the Molineux still holds huge threat for the 12-time winners of the famous cup.

Wolves have pulled up trees in their return to the Premier League. Under Nuno they have taken the scalps of Liverpool, Tottenham, Everton and Chelsea this season, as well as earning crucial draws against Man City and Saturday’s opposition Man United.

United will be pleased that they have had a full week to prepare for this tie, however, their injury list is still lengthy. Young (due to suspension), Sanchez, Valencia, Jones, Darmian and Lingard all look unlikely to take to the field on Saturday, whereas returns are expected from Mata and Herrera.

Jimenez is the man in form for Wolves. The Mexican striker has bagged 12 goals this campaign, with Diogo Jota proving a useful partner in crime in the attacking third. The 27-year-old striker has netted seven in his last ten and will be relied upon as a target man in front of United’s make-shift defence.

Wolves’s system has what it takes to upset the best sides in the league. Nuno’s passing philosophy enables them to control the tempo of matches, especially at home. United are on the verge of burnout after overachieving since the start of December; their injuries may finally start to impact their season.

This could be the best cup tie of the weekend, with extra-time/penalties a strong possibility.
