Analysis:
In a historic event for Tottenham Hotspur, Wednesday’s home fixture against Crystal Palace will be played in their new stadium after months of waiting. Due to be open at the start of the season, the reported £850m stadium has faced delay after delay, with the side taking temporary residence at Wembley Stadium over the past couple of years.
Pochettino described his players as “Superheroes” after losing 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday. They had chances, and there were plenty of spells where they had Liverpool on the back foot, but in the end, a defensive mix up proved the difference in last-minute heartbreak for the visitors. This loss has thrown Tottenham right back in the mix for a top-four tussle. They looked as though they had all but confirmed their place by the start of 2019, but without a league win since 10th February, it’s a case of four goes into two, with Arsenal, Man United and Chelsea all still in the hunt.
Spurs’ goals drying up have proved the biggest problem; bizarrely, it has coincided with the return of Harry Kane. They scored 22 goals in five matches over Christmas and the New Year, however, just five goals in their last six match in all comps, sides have taken advantage of Tottenham’s stretched squad.
Palace has quietly gone about their business. A solid cup run with another season of safety has to be considered a success for Roy Hodgson’s side, with their exciting attacking flair looking more effective on the road than at Selhurst Park. They’ve lost just one of their last six away Premier League matches, with an added incentive of ruining Spurs’ moving in party, on Wednesday night.
Fixtures between these two have become very low scoring in recent times. Just eight goals have been scored in their last seven meetings, and with Tottenham struggling in front of goal, this run looks likely to continue this week.
There will be plenty of nerves in North London, with the expectation heavy on Tottenham shoulders to deliver a win on their debut match in their new home. More dropped points could see them slip out of the top four next weekend, with a Champions League tie with City weighing heavily on their minds. Hodgson has been around the game long enough not to become embroiled in the narrative on Wednesday’s encounter.
