Man United vs Man City

Old Trafford

Wednesday 24th April

Kick-off: 20:00

Key stats:

– Two wins each and one draw in the last five meetings between the two Manchester clubs

– Man United haven’t won a league meeting at Old Trafford against City in their last three attempts

– Man City are four wins away from the Premier League title

– Man City have won six of their last seven away Premier League matches

– Over 2.5 goals in four of their last five league meetings

Analysis:

After being booted out of the Champions League this past week, both Manchester clubs can turn their attention to domestic matters as the clock ticks down on the 2018-19 season. A huge win at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday sets this tie-up perfectly for a make-or-break ninety minutes for Pep’s City side; a win would put them in prime position to become the first club to retain the Premier League title since their opponents managed to in 2009.

As is always the case with the final few weeks of league action, the injuries are adding up. Kevin de Bruyne became the latest sidelined star after being forced off in the opening half against Tottenham on Saturday, with Aguero following suit in the second half. The latter looks more likely to feature against United on Wednesday, but with Foden and Jesus more than adequate replacements on recent form, Pep knows he has enough artillery at his disposal to negate the remaining weeks of action.

United have struggled noticeably since Solskjaer got the job. Their inability to keep clean sheets has left them struggling to kill matches, with a visit from the goal-hungry City a daunting prospect in the first Manchester derby of 2019.

It’s a case of Sophie’s choice for United. Whether they would prefer Liverpool or City to win the Premier League obviously plays second-fiddle to their quest for Champions League football next season, but with a price of 5/2 to qualify for next year’s tournament, it looks to be slowly slipping away for the Red Devils after an impressive turnaround at the start of 2019.

Despite looking nervy doing so, City is off the back of two wins against an impressive Tottenham side. Scoring five goals over those two matches is a testament to the form that their front players are in, with Raheem Sterling leading the charge from the left of a front three. It’s a toss-up between Aguero and Jesus for the starting place at Old Trafford, with the Argentine’s ankle expected to hold up having been taken off as a precautionary method.

City need this victory more than United; Pep will make this abundantly clear before kick-off, with a Cup Final mentality expected from the visitors. City has scored an average of two goals per game in their last eight away Premier League matches, and I’ll be shocked if this trend doesn’t continue on Wednesday.

This fixture could have played out a lot differently at the start of the year, however, an away win looks on the cards with over 2.5 goals likely.

To say “Scoring five goals over those two matches is a testament to the form that their front players are in” is misleading considering City only got one goal in the second game.
