Man United vs Chelsea
Old Trafford
Sunday 28th April
Kick-off: 16:30
Key stats:
– Meetings between these two sides in the Premier League hasn’t seen an away win since 2013
– Man United have won the last two Premier League meetings at Old Trafford
– Chelsea sit three points ahead of United in the race for the top four
– Man United have lost five of their last six matches, scoring just three goals
– Chelsea have lost away matches to six of the top nine sides this season, only beating Watford
Analysis:
The race is well and truly on for the Champions League spots, and with just three matches remaining, Chelsea and Man United continue to trip over their own feet in an attempt to play amongst Europe’s elite next season.
Dropped points at home to Burnley on Monday was a huge missed opportunity for Sarri’s Chelsea. A 2-2 draw, coupled with injuries to Kante and Hudson-Odoi dented The Blues’ chances to move temporarily into third spot, but with Arsenal losing to Wolves on Wednesday, a win at Old Trafford would put them firmly back in the driving seat.
Man United have won just two of their last nine matches in all comps, losing a staggering seven. Their form is a huge concern for Solskjaer who is looking forward to a summer clear out at Old Trafford, with several under-performing stars first to get the kick.
A 2-0 win for United at Stamford Bridge earlier this year in the FA Cup will be fresh in the memories of the hosts. A dominant display limited Chelsea to any clear cut chances, with Rashford and Lukaku leading an impressive line. The wheels have come off since then, but with Chelsea’s away form against the stronger sides looking just as bleak, it may be a case of who wants to throw it away least on Sunday.
Losses to City, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal, Wolves and Everton – without showing any real chance of gaining a positive result – have derailed Chelsea’s aims of a challenge for the title this season. They seem a different animal away from home, with second-half performances leading to a spike in leaked goals. It’s a huge concern for Sarri, and without a real spine of leaders, Chelsea may struggle to fight for a positive result again in Manchester.
This fixture has historically favoured the home side, and with Chelsea’s form on the road, it’s hard to state a case for an away win. It’s likely to be a cagey start, with neither side showing the confidence to take it to the opposition.
A draw wouldn’t be a disaster for Chelsea. An organized display could eke out a point for the visitors, in a match that may not catch fire.
