Ajax vs Tottenham

Johan Cruyff Arena

Wednesday 8th May

Kick-off: 20:00

Key stats:

– Ajax won 1-0 in North London last weekend in their Champions League semi-final 1st leg

– Tottenham have lost eight of their last nine away matches

– Ajax have won six of their last seven home matches – their draw in that period was against Juventus

– Ajax secured the Dutch Cup at the weekend with a 4-0 win against Willem II

– Tottenham have lost 18 matches in all competitions this season

– Dusan Tadic has scored 24 league goals this season, second behind PSV’s de Jong

Analysis:

After struggling for the opening twenty minutes against a fluid Ajax team last Tuesday, Tottenham will be grateful at taking a slender 1-0 disadvantage to Amsterdam this week. Quick passing and movement off the ball caused the home defence continuous problems throughout the fixture, with Spurs never looking like threatening up the other end.

A huge boost for the travelling side will be the return of Heung-min Son. The South Korean was missing due to suspension from the first leg, but his injection of pace up front will give the Ajax defence a different problem to deal with. There have been whisperings of a possible return for Harry Kane in this must-win fixture, although it is still unlikely, and well ahead of schedule for the England striker.

Tottenham needs to score in Amsterdam, and with Ajax conceding seven goals in their last five matches at the newly named Johan Cruyff Arena, it’s not unbelievable to assume that Pochettino’s side will be able to craft chances in the Netherlands.

With attacking aspirations needed for Tottenham, it is likely that Ajax will enjoy luring the North Londoners into a slug-fest. Ajax’s mobile midfield will benefit hugely from Tottenham pressure, with counter-attacking opportunities inevitably leading to goals.

Tottenham have more than enough about them to score on Wednesday, but keeping a clean sheet, or even limiting Ajax to one goal will be a huge ask. Tottenham’s recent record away from home has been appalling, recording a solitary 1-0 away win in Dortmund since January 20th; every other away fixture has ended in defeat.

Back-to-back losses in the league to West Ham and Bournemouth have seen Tottenham’s momentum seep out of every pore; expect Wednesday to resemble their season, with a positive start tailing off at the end.

Both teams will surely find the net on Wednesday, however, the home side could end up winning this one at a canter. Second leg semi-finals often throw up some weird and wonderful results.
