Analysis:
It’s Cup Final day, with an unlikely team joining the imperious Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It’s just Watford’s second attempt at FA Cup glory, having lost their only previous final 2-0 to Everton in 1984. Since then, a semi-final place in 2016 gave them a slight taste of what was to come this season, with Gracia’s side overachieving in an impressive 2018-19 campaign.
The standout result for the Hornets this season was their semi-final turnaround against a dangerous Wolves side. A 3-2 win in extra-time having trailed Nuno’s side by two goals set them on their way to return to Wembley; three back-to-back losses at the end of the Premier League campaign don’t do Watford justice in how they have performed domestically.
City is on the verge of becoming the first English side to win the domestic treble (Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup). This season may have had a stronger focus on success in the Champions League, but with Pep’s side flexing their muscles against the best that England has to offer, it’s been another remarkable season for the Sky Blues.
Watford will come into the final with a desire and belief that they can win the trophy. Often teams fall into the trap of sitting back against City expecting a chance on the counter to steal a goal, however, Watford’s robust midfield is likely to stick it to the champions, with the intention to make this as physical of a final as possible.
City’s blip came and went fairly rapidly over December and January. Losses to Chelsea, Palace, Leicester and Newcastle fell in the space of two months, however, since then City has won 21 of their 22 matches played.
Watford’s demise at the end of the season shouldn’t be too much of a concern for Gracia and his team. Despite winning just two of their last nine league matches, the Hornets would have been preparing for this final for the majority of May, with City having to commit to winning the Premier League on the final day of the season.
City will score, there is no doubt, so it becomes a case of how many chances the underdogs can create at the other end. With Deulofeu and Pereyra likely to cause problems in the final third, it’s down to Deeney and Gray to sniff out those chances.
