Derby County vs Aston Villa

Championship Playoff Final

Wembley Stadium

Monday 27th May

Kick-off: 15:00

Key stats:

– Aston Villa won both fixtures this season by an aggregate score of 7-0

– Derby with one win in the last nine meetings

– Derby’s previous Championship Playoff win came in 2007

– Aston Villa lost in last season’s Playoff final to Fulham

– Both sides lost one of their semi-final legs (to Leeds and West Brom, respectively)

– Both sides with 20 league wins this season in the Championship

Analysis:

The narrative around this Monday’s Championship Playoff Final is two-fold. Firstly, the return to the Premier League for one of the “old guard”: both sides have been considered top division teams throughout their history despite a recent fall down the football pyramid.

Secondly, the Chelsea sub-plot of Frank Lampard vs. John Terry. Derby’s manager may well be on the verge of joining Chelsea next season (if rumours are true), however, taking on Aston Villa’s assistant coach John Terry at Wembley Stadium has enough traction to fill column inches pre-match. A battle of wit between two of the most respected figures in recent history in England.

Aston Villa was the standout side in the Championship towards the back-end of the regular season. An incredible run of ten straight wins between March and April saw Dean Smith guide his side into the top six with room to breathe going into the final couple of fixtures; this followed a dire run of two wins in 13 over the winter period.

Lampard has had a mixed season at the Derby helm, but his ability to win the games that really matter has punctuated his success at Pride Park. He has developed a young, eager side, bound to the commitment of playing for Derby and their positive backroom staff. Their 4-2 win at Elland Road to see them advance into the final was one of the standout results of the whole season. Derby became the first side to lose the first leg of a playoff semi-final at home, to go on to win the tie overall.

Harry Wilson and Mason Mount have been a huge success in their breakout seasons. On loan from Liverpool and Chelsea, the youngsters have flourished in the Derby midfield, with thoughts already turning to next season and which club they will play for. A promotion for Derby may act as a double-edged sword, with an exodus of players/management feared for the summer.

Villa’s heartbreak in last season’s Playoff Final will no doubt act as added inspiration this season around. Lessons will have been learnt in defeat against Fulham, with Villa coming into this match as the favourite for victory. In Tammy Abraham leading the line, they have the firepower to trouble a Derby defence that has struggled this season; Derby’s 3-0 and 4-0 losses to the Villains will weight heavy on their minds.
