World Cup – Latest News

What a crazy day of football that was yesterday. Five penalties across four games, two of which were missed, we had plenty of VAR usage (and controversially at times, particularly if you are an Aussie) and goal line technology (again the Aussie's were on the wrong end of this).

Messi of all people missed a penalty (although it's something like four missed in seven for him now) as a, yet again, spirited Iceland held on for a draw. Peru looked impressive against Denmark before missing a penalty themselves. You almost knew that once they missed that penalty, Denmark would end up knocking a one-nil win, which is exactly what happened. Then in the final game Croatia beat Nigeria two-nil, including yet another penalty, scored by Modric.

All in all, very entertaining but not our day from a betting perspective and we'll hope for more luck today as move on to the Sunday matches.

World Cup Day 4 – Best Bet

Brazil were the first side to qualify for Russia 18 and they are a side with confidence restored by manager Tite, following that disaster four years ago.

Neymar has also made a well timed return from injury, scoring twice in two friendlies. As key as Neymar is, this is a more balanced team now with the likes of Gabrial Jesus, Firmino, Coutihno, among others, offering a lot more dimensions and options to their play. It's quite the support cast.

Switzerland are a solid side (Ranked 6th in the World according to FIFA which I think is a stretch), they have kept 11 clean sheets in 14 games and recently held Spain to a one all draw.

As solid as Switzerland are, they are pretty blunt in attack and therefore Brazil should still edge this, probably 2-0.

Today's other World Cup games;

Germany v Mexico

Despite some suspect friendly results recently, the Germans are well fancied to retain their World Cup crown. You simply have to respect the Germans when it comes to the World Cup. Just look at some of these stats:

  • They have topped their World Cup Group every time since 1986
  • Since 1954, they have reached the semi-finals 75% of the time
  • 100% of the time they have reached the last eight
  • 50% of the time they have reached the final

That is simply incredible. With that in mind, we'll be backing the Germans to get off to another winning start.

Germany to win and over 2.5 goals at 2.10

Costa Rica v Serbia

This is pretty much the same Costa Rica side that lit up the World Cup four years ago, just four years older. Experience is important but I feel that they have probably stagnated a little in that time rather than continue to evolve. Recent friendly defeats (2-0 England and 4-1 Belgium) won't have helped confidence either.

Serbia on the hand are widely tipped as potential dark horses in the tournament and with the likes of Milinković-Savić in the side, it is an opinion I'm inclined to agree with.

If you are going to miss a game today, this is probably the one to do so (q the 4-4 all draw now), but from a betting perspective, I like the look of Serbia at 1.90

Serbia to win at 1.90
