World Cup – Latest News

We were tad unlucky not to get a double from our Trixie on the over 2.5 goals. Denmark and Australia played out a 1-1 draw and on the basis of play it would have been reasonable for us to expect at least one more goal in that game, which was thoroughly enjoyable to watch all the same. In the second game we did not get the fireworks we hoped for and France ground out a 1 nil win and sent poor Peru home.

And what can we say about the last game… Croatia demolished Argentina who are now in a real fight to get out of the group. At times it honestly felt like the type of performance we have seen so often from England over recent times. If nothing else, our tournament progression lay on Argentina is looking pretty good right now.

World Cup Day 9 – Best Bet

Ten of Brazil's seventeen victories under Tite have been by either a 2-0 or 3-0 scoreline. Like Switzerland, Costa Rica will look to make this tough, however Brazil should have the measure more than they did against Costa Rica. In the past ten matches between them, Brazil have won 9. They have also beaten them twice at the World Cup before, 1-0 in 1990, and 5-2 back in 2002.

A couple of oddities in the stats that are worth bearing in mind as a counter balance. Brazil are now winless in their last three World Cup matches but I really can't see that extending to four.

Of more concern, perhaps not for today, but for the remainder of the tournament is that Brazil have conceded 10 goals from the last 13 shots on target.

Today's other World Cup games;

Nigeria v Iceland

After last nights results, this match holds even more importance than it did already.

Nigeria really need a win here, knowing that they face Argentina in their last group game. While a draw may be more acceptable to Iceland, if they could pick up the win here, it could leave them with the opportunity of playing out a ‘draw' in their final game against Croatia and sending the Argies home.

One note which may give Nigeria some comfort is that all five of their past World Cup wins have come against European opposition.

This match did not look like one for goals, even before last night, with both sides recording regular under results (Nigeria have also failed to score in six of their last 11 World Cup matches)

Serbia v Switzerland

Both sides here will be happy with their results from the first game, yet the pressure will perhaps be slightly more on Serbia with them having to face Brazil in their final game.

As Brazil found out, Switzerland are a tough nut to crack and they have now gone 23 matches with just one defeat. Couple that with the last 8 games played by both sides, only three out of the sixteen have gone overs.

If there is going to be a goal in this game, the most likely source is Newcastle reject, Aleksandar Mitrovic, who has scored 14 times in his last 17 for Serbia.

Bonus recommendation

Back under 2.5 goals in both Serbia and Nigeria at odds around 2.25
