Match Analysis
Spain vs England, Benito Villamarin
Monday 15th October, Kick-off: 19:45
Key stats:
– Spain won 2-1 at Wembley when these sides last met in September
– Neither team has scored more than two goals in their last seven meetings
– Spain have won 5 of the last 7 meetings
– Both teams have scored twice in their last 10 meetings
– England have won one of their last five matches
– Spain have scored 12 goals in their last three wins
– Spain top Nations League Group 4 with six points from six.
Analysis:
It still feels like an experimental period in the limited reigns of both managers. Gareth Southgate adopted a back four against Croatia on Friday having had success with a back three at the World Cup, and Luis Enrique opted for youth against Wales on Thursday as La Roja tore into Ryan Giggs’ side winning 4-1.
Carvajal, Jordi Alba, Isco and Diego Costa were all missing from Enrique’s side, however, Paco Alcacer filled the void as he netted his first two goals for Spain in over two years. Gareth Bale was missing for Wales, so Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa was kept fairly quiet in a match where Wales struggled to create.
England’s draw away in Croatia was a drab affair. Expected, perhaps, by the lack of crowd after it was confirmed the game would be played behind closed doors. Youngster Jadon Sancho shone in a cameo appearance late in the fixture, with his electric pace causing nightmares for the Croatian defence; whether he will feature against Spain is to be seen.
In a season where Ross Barkley has so far impressed for Chelsea, he struggled to find that creative edge to cut through the Croatian defence. In a fixture against Spain where they will receive a lot less of the ball, the 24-year-old will have to show he is capable of winning the ball back high.
England got a lot of chances when these two met in September and will have been disappointed to leave Wembley without a point. Southgate still doesn’t appear to know what his best defence comprises on; something that the Spanish frontline are likely to take advantage of.
England have scored just three goals in their last five matches, and despite being against tricky opposition, an away trip to Spain doesn’t look like ending this run. I can’t see England getting much on Monday night, with Spain waltzing to top spot in this Nations League group.
