Match Analysis
Manchester United vs Juventus, Old Trafford
Tuesday 23rd October, Kick-off: 20:00
Key stats:
– Five wins each in their twelve meetings
– Man United have won the last three meetings; unbeaten in four
– Man United won 3-0 last time these two sides met in 2003
– Over 2.5 goals in their last three matches
– Cristiano Ronaldo makes his return to Old Trafford
Analysis:
This fixture, undoubtedly, will be engulfed by Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford. Having being touted as a potential summer signing by his compatriot, Jose Mourinho, Ronaldo opted for Turin instead as he looks to drag the Old Lady to a Champions League title.
Having only suffered a one game suspension for his sending off against Valencia, ‘CR7’ was made available for both matches against the side that built his career.
Things are looking up for Mourinho and Man United, however, taking a closer look at their form would suggest that there is still a lot of work to do. After turning around a 2-0 deficit to Newcastle, United were seconds away from beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. They had to settle for a point, but the attacking flair that the visitors displayed in the second half will be of comfort to the Red Devils ahead of this testing week.
Juventus stumbled for the first time this season in a 1-1 home draw to Genoa. All other ten of Allegri’s side’s outings had finished in a win previous to Saturday’s draw; perhaps this will fuel the hunger for a positive result in Manchester.
Ronaldo scored in this 1-1 draw, and is likely to come close on Tuesday night; the Portuguese forward will forever be a man for the big occasion.
With Cuadrado, Mandzukic, Dybala, Douglas Costa and Bernardeschi all in contention to start this Champions League fixture, their strength in depth is a frightening prospect. Young was sublime on Saturday in taming Eden Hazard, however, will have to continue this man-marking effort against the wit of Ronaldo.
Juventus’s 100% away record this season comes up against a United side that have struggled at Old Trafford. Despite seeing a light at the end of the tunnel, Mourinho’s side are still very vulnerable. If Pogba tries too hard against his former club, the home side may come exposed in midfield.
This will probably be tight. I think it’s too soon for United to get a victory here; a draw would be well earned.
