Match Analysis
Tottenham vs Man City, Wembley Stadium
Monday 29th October, Kick-off: 20:00
Key stats:
– Man City have won the last two meetings scoring seven goals
– Both teams have scored in all but one of their last six meetings
– Man City still unbeaten in the Premier League this season, scoring 26 goals
– Tottenham have won their last four league matches
– Both teams have scored in 71% of all of Tottenham’s matches this season
Analysis:
Despite their injury concerns, Tottenham have managed to progress well in the league after a minor blip. Sitting just two points off the top of the league, a win at Wembley Stadium on Monday night would see them leapfrog City towards the summit of the table; Pep is well versed in this high-pressured matches and has a fully equipped squad capable of nullifying Spurs.
Rotation, rotation, rotation. This has proved key for Guardiola’s success at Man City and the Spaniard has continued to chop and change his starting eleven between fixtures. Their returning talisman Kevin De Bruyne returned to the starting eleven in midweek away at Shakhtar, as Bernardo, Sane and Aguero got priceless minutes on the bench. Expect all three to be back in the starting line-up on Monday evening, as City look to penetrate with their free-flowing style.
Spurs had a trickier trip in the Champions League as they drew 2-2 with a dangerous PSV side. With just one point from their three European outings, a focus on the Premier League could soon see a shift in Pochettino’s tactics, with the top five beginning to bunch up tightly.
There is no doubt that Tottenham will come to win this fixture at the national stadium. They have a favourable recent history against the reigning champions, beating City three times in the last six meetings; the last coming two years ago.
City haven’t quiet reached the standards they set last season; a physical performance in the middle of the pitch could see the visitors run out of ideas, with a reliance forming on their fluid interchanges.
Tottenham are a big side and need to make the most of set piece opportunities. They know they can breach this City defence, and with three back-to-back clean sheets kept in the Premier League, Loris and co may fancy an unexpected shut out.
When it comes down to it, Pep and City usually find a way. Spurs’ confidence will be dented from their midweek trip and may get leggy chasing the City shadows.
