Match Analysis
Man City vs Man United, Etihad Stadium
Sunday 11th November, Kick-off: 16:30
Key stats:
– Both matches last season ended in away wins for the first time since 2012-13
– Over 2.5 goals in three of the last six – balanced on a knife edge
– City have scored 33 goals so far this Premier League season, conceding just four
– United have taken ten points from their last twelve available
– City haven’t won this home fixture since 2014
– City have taken maximum points at home this season scoring 24 points
Analysis:
In the first Manchester derby of the season, Pep Guardiola has a chance to flex his City muscles as he goes in search of his first Premier League derby win at the Etihad.
City are beginning to purr. Despite only dropping four points so far this season they have sort of gone under the radar in comparison to last season’s record breaking start. Their squad depth will pull them out of holes they may find themselves in this season; a notable hole was their 3-2 loss to United in this fixture last season.
Since their 0-0 draw with Liverpool in October, City have won five league matches back-to-back, scoring seventeen and conceding twice; Mourinho will need to organise his defence to the strictest detail to stop the flood of City goals continuing on Sunday.
United’s biggest asset in recent weeks has been Anthony Martial. The Frenchman has guided United back into a reasonable run of form with wins over Everton and Bournemouth, however, his pace will be put under scrutiny by City’s flying wing backs and agile centre halves. Mata’s guile may be enforced to greater effect if the visitors are struggling to keep possession.
Inevitably, Jose will look to stifle City’s relentless attack and catch them on the break. This tactic has worked many times against dangerous opposition, however, something tells me Pep will be wiser to Mourinho than in previous years.
City can afford to be patient on Sunday. Having conceded in their last seven Premier League games, the hosts will know that the goals will eventually come against their rivals defence. After blitzing Shakhtar in the week, a refreshed yet confident City should be more than capable of getting all three points. United’s win away at Juventus is huge for their confidence, but will have taken it out of the legs of the Red Devils.
Don’t expect last year’s run of away wins in this derby to continue. City could win this at a canter, but will probably keep the scoreline modest with Jose refusing to get embarrassed.
