Match Analysis

West Ham vs Man City, The London Stadium

Saturday 24th November, Kick-off: 15:00

Key stats:

– Over 2.5 goals in last seven meetings

– West Ham have conceded 13 goals against City in their last three home meetings

– Man City unbeaten in their twelve league games this season

– City have scored more than double West Ham so far this season; West Ham have conceded more than three times the amount of City (5)

– West Ham with two home wins all season – conceding in both

Analysis:

This is a fixture that is generally feared by West Ham. Their soft core has leaked goal after goal to Man City’s evolving attack over the past few seasons and this year doesn’t appear to be very different.

The Hammers are currently conceding an average of 1.5 goals a game, and with City averaging 3 per match up the other end, Saturday’s fixture looks all set for an attack vs. defence narrative.

It’s not all doom and gloom for West Ham. Their attacking options are gelling after a poor start to the season, and with Felipe Anderson and Marko Arnautovic consistently finding the net, Manuel Pellegrini will feel confidence in turning results around in the flash of a counter attack.

The problem the hosts will face on Saturday is getting the ball for long enough periods to trouble City’s constant pressure. Their free-flowing midfield creates chance after chance for their attacking three, with Aguero’s questionable away form under pressure from Gabriel Jesus waiting in the wings.

The injuries are building up for Pep’s side. Mendy and De Bruyne are still sidelined, with Bernardo Silva suffering after being away with his Portuguese squad for the Nations League break. There is a chance that Silva will start on Saturday, but with City’s midfield potentially more fractured than usual it will be down to Pellegrini to enforce a high press from the home side as they look to pressure the champions into making mistakes.

City have scored four or five goals in their last three trips to the London Stadium. I wouldn’t be so sure that this run will continue, however, the hosts shouldn’t have too many problems breaking down this unpredictable West Ham side. The longer the Hammers can keep the hosts at bay the fewer they will conceded; I can see a breakthrough coming in the first half.
