Match Analysis
Chelsea vs Man City, Stamford Bridge
Saturday 6th December, Kick-off: 17:30
Key stats:
– Under 2.5 goals in last three meetings
– Man City have won the last three meetings without conceding
– Man City unbeaten in the league so far this season
– Both teams have scored in 5 of the last 10 meetings, 7 of the last 14 (50% hit-rate, market to avoid)
– Chelsea have won just one of their last four Premier League matches
Analysis:
It’s been a concerning fortnight for Chelsea, highlighted my Maurizio Sarri’s admission to the media. Questioning the team’s “heart” and “attitude” in following press conferences, Chelsea are in poor shape coming into their biggest test of the season so far.
Just one win – at home to the league’s worst performing team, Fulham – in their last four league outings, Chelsea have slipped into fourth spot, ten points off the leaders and their opposition on Saturday tea time. In a season that started so positively for the Blues, it has quickly turned into a dash for the top four, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham seemingly in a hunt for two Champions League spots.
The form of their attacking jewels is one of the biggest concerns for Sarri. As brilliant as the Belgian is, Hazard blows hot and cold in fixtures where he is required to make a difference; the constant flip-flopping between Morata and Giroud upfront is filling neither with the confidence required to lead the line at such an expectant club with any real conviction.
Pep rotated midweek – although not as heavily as a lot of sides – and managed to squeeze out a 2-1 win away at Watford. A solid result for the Spaniard who has only dropped four points all season so far, to Liverpool and Wolves.
Scoring an average of three goals a game (45 in 15) is why they sit comfortably on the perch of the Premier League; it’ll take some team to de-rail this City side who are arguably playing the best football in the world right now.
Sarri admitted this. The Chelsea boss believes City are the best team in the world currently, with the Italian lowering expectations for his sides performance on Saturday.
Chelsea have failed to breach the City defence in their last three attempts, and with the champions cantering in attack to goal after goal, it’s hard to see this Chelsea defence keeping a clean sheet. Questions over Kepa and David Luiz are sure to be underlined when Sane, Sterling and the Silvas are testing them to their fullest.
Aguero’s injury concern isn’t too much of a problem for Pep. They won this fixture without him last season and will be confident of repeating this feat. As attractive as Sarri’s football is, this Chelsea team don’t appear to have the bottle to cause big upsets.
