Analysis:
Despite falling to Leicester at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Chelsea continued to play with a positive attacking freedom, instilled by Sarri. They were patient, hit the post, bar and got stung up the wrong end by a Jamie Vardy hammer. This result, however, will give Watford confidence on Wednesday as they look to build on recent wins against West Ham and Cardiff.
A huge reason for the Hornets’ success this season has been their robust midfield. Docoure and Capoue make it difficult for opposing midfields to get a grip on the game, with Pereyra causing a constant threat from the left wing. This pairing, with their muscular frames likely to be used to intimidate the intricate Chelsea three will constantly pressure Jorginho; the Blues will be confident of using the ball well and quickly.
Sarri is beginning to implement at Chelsea what he did so well at Napoli. Pedro, Hazard and Willian are being used in a three upfront, much like Insigne, Mertens and Callejon. Morata and Giroud are slowly being frozen out and considered as substitute options with Sarri focusing on a pace in attack.
Chelsea lost this fixture 4-1 in February with Conte’s Chelsea unraveling. That result will breed confidence within Watford with many of the personnel remaining.
Both teams look sure to score in this one. Despite having the third best defence in the league so fair this season, Chelsea continue to leak single goals – only eight clean sheets have been kept by the Blues in the league.
