Match Analysis

Thursday 3rd January, Kick-off: 20:00
Key stats:
– Liverpool have lost this fixture once in the last 11 meetings
– Finished 0-0 in October at Anfield
– Liverpool lead City by seven points coming into Thursday’s fixture
– Liverpool still unbeaten in the league this season after playing every side.
– Over 2.5 goals in 8 of their last 10 matches combined
– City have conceded twice the amount of goals that Liverpool have this season, scoring six more
Analysis:
It’s the match of the season so far in the Premier League, and arguably, the most important as we continue to keep an eye on the title race. Liverpool lead the Premier League by six points ahead of Tottenham, with City a further point behind.
Liverpool flexed their muscles against Arsenal in expected fashion on Saturday. Their 5-1 drubbing of the Gunners underlined their ruthless streak in front of goal, with Klopp’s Liverpool playing with undeniable freedom within a squad that is happy to rotate. Smiles are plastered across the faces of the reds, with City in the unusual position of chasing the league leaders after their incredible 2017-18 season.
City bounced back after three defeats in four matches by taking care of Southampton in a 3-1 victory. The return of Fernandinho looked crucial for the balance in the side, with the Brazilian’s engine in that midfield role irreplaceable in the current squad; John Stones and Gundogan tried but failed to do so.
What we know this these two sides is that they will both come to win the game and both attack in the only way they know. Pep’s possession, playing out from the back style will look to cope with Klopp’s high press, with demons of last year in the Champions League still hanging over Man City’s squad.
City need to win this match if they are to realistically remain in the frame for the title. A ten point gap would be a huge ask to chase down with less than half the season remaining; Klopp will know the pressure is on the home side on Thursday.
City won this fixture 5-0 last season, however, with a 2-1 loss at the Etihad in the Champions League, the home side know the dangers of Liverpool in Manchester.
Klopp will take a point on Thursday, however, Pep has the tools to punish a Liverpool defence that has only conceded eight league goals all season. The tide has turned too quickly in the Premier League over the past month; I’m not certain this Liverpool side are the finished article. A home win will extend the title race putting doubts in the mind of Liverpool’s leading pack, the question is: can they cling on?
