Match Analysis
Arsenal vs Chelsea, Emirates Stadium
Saturday 19th January, Kick-off: 17:30
Key stats:
– There hasn’t been more than one goal in this fixture in the last six
– Four draws in the last six meetings
– Arsenal have kept just three clean sheets in the league all season
– Arsenal have conceded nearly twice the amount of Premier League goals as Chelsea
– Chelsea haven’t scored more than two goals in the past 13 matches
– Chelsea last won at the Emirates in January 2016
Analysis:
The honeymoon period is over for both Unai Emery and Maurizio Sarri in London. Both managers had impressive starts to their new roles managing Arsenal and Chelsea, respectively, however, recent weeks have seen questions arise over their suitability and credentials in the Premier League.
Arsenal enjoyed a long unbeaten run following their 3-2 defeat at Stamford Bridge in August, but despite this impressive run, there were still underlying problems with the Arsenal squad; namely in defence. Their lack of clean sheets (just three in the Premier League) has Emery scratching his head at the back; improvements need to be made in January.
Sarri’s recent troubles have come from a football philosophy point of view. His Sarri-ball tactics have frustrated parts of the Chelsea faithful, with Hazard continuing to play in the “false 9” role when many would prefer him running at the defence from the left.
A win over Newcastle last weekend kept Chelsea in the hunt of Tottenham; they trail their rivals by just one point as they look over their shoulders at the incoming charge of Man United.
Arsenal look like conceding every time they take to the field, however, Chelsea have shown their troubles at breaking down defences that sit deep. This won’t happen on Saturday with the Gunners likely to attack on the front foot from early on – this will enable Chelsea to use their pace to their advantage.
Apart from a brace against Spurs, Aubameyang has failed to net against any of the big sides this season. His 14 goals this season have been crucial for Arsenal, however, the striker may go missing again against a stronger outfit.
Chelsea will score at the Emirates, but are likely to concede themselves. A repeat of the 3-2 match at Stamford Bridge earlier this season wouldn’t be a shock.
