Analysis:
News travels fast around Europe when one of the big boys isn’t performing well. This was the case earlier on in the season when Bayern were struggling to keep pace with a rampant Dortmund, however, the blip in form was never much more than a blip.
The German champions have taken 48 point from a possible 66 in the league and are still well within touching distance of the Yellow Wall that stands between them and a 29th Bundesliga title. The Bavarians cruised through their Champions League group without tasting defeat, despite being held twice by an impressive Ajax side.
Liverpool are made for these nights. Anfield under the European lights is a magical occasion, with every version of a Liverpool side through the years adding another 10% to their games on nights like these. They’ll be looking to go for the Bayern throat early in this fixture, with a cautious eye on a second leg trip to the Allianz Arena in a few weeks time. A healthy lead will be on Klopp’s mind as he takes on a former rival in the shape of Die Roten.
Liverpool came back to life in the Premier League just over a week ago as they dissected Bournemouth 3-0 at Anfield. After a couple of stale performances, the Liverpool we have come to know in recent months were back with free-flowing attacks finding weaknesses in their opponents all over the park. Wijnaldum is becoming a hugely important player for the Reds. The Dutchman is expected to get a start on Tuesday, with the familiar trio of Mane, Firmino and Salah ahead of him.
Despite having played early this weekend on Friday, Bayern still won’t be as fresh as a Liverpool side who would have spent ten days out of competition by the time these two sides meet. This will give added impetuous for an energetic display from the home side, as they look to capitalise on the German’s sides leaky defence; they have conceded the most goals in the top four of the Bundesliga so far this season.
Bayern are currently on a run of eight away Champions League matches without defeat. They have an affinity with this competition, but not on the level of Liverpool’s. Liverpool should get the win on Tuesday, but the bigger picture of the evening will be whether they concede or not. This could change the complexion of the tie at any moment.
