Analysis:
It was heartbreak for both sides at the weekend. Chelsea lost out on penalty shootout to Man City at Wembley after a spirited 0-0 draw, whilst Tottenham saw their slim title chances go up in smoke having dropped all three points away at Burnley.
This is a huge derby for both clubs, often going unnoticed by the wider media. Tottenham’s record at the Bridge was abysmal prior to last season’s 3-1 victory – before that they had failed to win away to Chelsea since 1990. It’s usually a fixture Chelsea have been able to dominate at home, however, this young Tottenham squad aren’t weighed down by the history books.
Spurs are now six points off the leaders Liverpool, with a tricky run of fixtures to negate in the coming weeks. Pochettino has been coy about his side’s title aspirations, but a focus on consolidating their top four finish has to take priority now.
Chelsea sit in sixth with a game in hand, looking to hunt down Arsenal and United to fourth place. One goes into three between these three sides, with United’s stalemate against Liverpool bringing the trio within range of each other. It’s a must-win for Sarri and Chelsea if they are to stay in touch; it’s unclear whether Sarri will last another defeat.
Tottenham are levels above this version of Chelsea at the moment, but you can’t underestimate Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. They will always turn up at home, with Tottenham needing a huge performance to take all three points. Kane’s return to fitness is a huge positive for the visitors, but Chelsea’s spirit should see them escape with a point.
Sarri’s decision to start or drop Kepa will create headlines pre-match. A heavy loss will surely see the end of the Italian’s reign.
