Match Analysis

Tottenham V Arsenal, Wembley Stadium

Saturday 2nd March, Kick-off: 12:30

Key stats:

  • Neither side have registered back-to-back wins against each other since 2014
  • Under 2.5 goals in five of the last six meetings
  • Tottenham have lost back-to-back league matches for the first time this season
  • Just four points separate these two sides at kick-off
  • Arsenal have won their last three league matches scoring nine goals
  • Half of Tottenham’s league losses have come at Wembley (4).

Analysis:

The North London derby has failed to disappoint in recent years. A mixed bag of results have seen no true consistency in the winner of Tottenham vs. Arsenal fixtures, with Arsenal the last side to notch up back-to-back wins five years ago.

This time around, it’s Tottenham who are struggling for form after suffering back-to-back defeats away to Burnley and Chelsea. These losses have coincided with the return to form of star-striker Harry Kane, which has raised certain eyebrows.

Spurs lacked a real intensity against Chelsea in midweek, with Poch claiming it is “impossible” for this Tottenham squad to win the league; it’s a case of looking behind them now, with Man United, Chelsea, and Saturday’s visitors, Arsenal hot on their heels.

Arsenal have found their groove again after a favourable run of fixtures. Scoring five at home to Bournemouth may have fitted the script, however, the Gunners are beginning to create opportunities from all over the pitch, with five different players getting on the score sheet.

Ozil’s reintroduction into the starting eleven allowed their creative cog to turn, and despite Bournemouth shipping the third most goals in the league this season, Arsenal took their chances well.

A win at Wembley on Saturday would see them finish the weekend just one point off their North London rivals – a huge incentive with Emery still looking for his standout win as Arsenal boss this season. The Gunners have still fallen to the usual suspects this season suffering away defeats to City, Chelsea, Liverpool and even West Ham, but the blood will be boiling in a derby that can often throw up surprises.

Tottenham’s defence will be short of confidence come Saturday, with Kieran Trippier’s own goal the icing on the capitulating cake. It may be a stretch for Arsenal to get all three points, but they should be competitive for the whole 90 minutes.
