Analysis:

The Euro 2020 qualifiers are up and running as England play host to the Czech Republic on Friday night. Buoyed by 2018’s “summer of love” at the World Cup, Southgate’s men continued their form into the Nations League at the end of last year; a stress-free qualifications to the next European Championships is the upcoming hurdle for these young Lions to jump.

Semi-finalists in Russia and semi-finalists in the Nations League. There is no arguments surrounding England’s positioning as strong favourites coming up against this Czech Republic side. The Three Lions’ results have gone to form since Southgate took over, with wins against weaker sides caveated with losses against some of the world’s best. This being said, a 3-2 away win in Spain back in October may well have done more for their self-confidence than their successes in Russia.

Southgate has continued with his philosophy of picking youth over experience. Call ups for the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi, Jadon Sancho and Declan Rice have underlined the trust he has in the future of this England outfit.

Friday marks the first time these two teams will play each other in a competitive fixture. Their last meeting came in 2008, where Joe Cole saved England’s blushes with a last minute strike. Milan Baros and Wes Brown found themselves on the scoresheets, underlining the time that has passed since that night at the newly opened Wembley Stadium.

This Czech side isn’t one of their best. A distinct lack of Premier League stars opens the narrative of comparison for teams of the past. Only Tomas Kalas and Matej Vydra will register on many England fans’ radar, with a scattering of others from La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga.

An injury blow to the away side’s goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik and playmaker Borek Dockal could prove pivotal in North London. Jaroslav Silhavy is likely to line up in a 4-1-4-1 formation in response to a free-flowing England home attack. A stifling draw will be high on the agenda.

Sterling, Kane and Rashford are expected to lead the line for England, with a Tottenham midfield of Rose, Alli, Dier and Trippier allowing the wing backs to fly forward. Pickford should keep his place in the sticks despite his troubling club form.

England are still on the crest of a wave and look unlikely to drop many points in this Euro 2020 qualifying group. Especially at Wembley.
