Match Analysis

Man United vs Barcelona

Old Trafford

Wednesday 10th April

Kick-off: 20:00

Key stats:

– Barcelona have won the last two meetings, both in Champions League finals

– Man United have lost three of their last five matches

– Man United have lost at Old Trafford to Juventus and PSG this season

– Barcelona have lost three of their last 31 matches in all comps

– Man United have won both two-legged ties against Barcelona

Analysis:

There have been certain vulnerabilities creeping into this Man United side ever since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was confirmed to get the managerial position on a full-time basis. Losses to Arsenal and Wolves (twice) have stunted their quest for silverware and a place in the top four.

Keeping clean sheets is becoming an obvious problem for the Red Devils’ back line. They’ve conceded in their last seven matches, having enjoyed a period of stability over Christmas and the new year.

Barcelona has looked back to their rampant best in recent weeks, with the form of Lionel Messi still managing to turn heads. The Argentinean has scored thirteen goals in his last ten appearance for club and country, with two hat-tricks and two braces included in this run.

Without a loss in their last eight away matches, Barcelona arrives in Manchester have scored four goals in each of their last two matches on the road. With goals leaking into United’s game, it’s impossible to see Barcelona failing to find the net at least once on Wednesday evening.

United have had a week to prepare for this fixture, with key striker Marcus Rashford looking likely to start having been suffering from an ankle injury.

Two astounding stats coming into this fixture are that firstly, Barcelona has never won at Old Trafford, and secondly, Lionel Messi has failed to score in his last 11 Champions League quarterfinal ties. It will be surprising if both of those stats remain in-play following ninety minutes on Wednesday evening.

United’s honeymoon period with Ole is over; a crash back to reality could be a bitter pill to swallow, with Barca showing no mercy.
