Analysis:

The ghost of Chelsea Football Club looks set to attempt to haunt the title challenge of Liverpool once again on Sunday. We all remember Steven Gerrard’s slip, allowing Demba Ba to blow Liverpool’s hopes in the 2014-2015 season. It’s now down to Sarri to dent Klopp’s hopes of a maiden Premier League title for this historic club.

Liverpool and Chelsea have enjoyed an intense rivalry over the past decade. Peaking in the Benitez and Mourinho years, the two sides have often locked horns for the biggest accolades, whether it is in the Champions League, League Cup or in the Premier League title race.

The most recent meeting was intriguingly poised. A last-minute wonder strike from Daniel Sturridge meant the spoils were shared at Stamford Bridge, just three days after an Eden Hazard wonder-goal saw The Blues dump Liverpool out of the League Cup.

The stakes are huge for Liverpool on Sunday. They will expect to trail Man City by a point at kick-off, knowing that five wins from their remaining five matches are the only realistic way they will be seeing the Premier League crown returning to the Kop this summer.

Liverpool’s record at home against Chelsea in the Premier League is a cause for concern. The last three meetings at Anfield have finished in 1-1 draws, with Chelsea winning two of the three previous to that. Chelsea may have had their struggles this season under Sarri, but it will be interesting to see of their big-game management has improved over the past couple of weeks. Losses at Tottenham, Arsenal, Man City and Everton this season have punctuated Chelsea’s vulnerabilities on the road.

Wins in midweek against Porto and Slavia Prague, respectively, won’t tell us too much about Sunday’s fixture. Chelsea is expected to recall Hazard, Higuain and Hudson-Odoi to the attack, with Loftus-Cheek returning in midfield. Wijnaldum is expected to be called into the Liverpool starting eleven, with Robertson returning to full-back following his Champions League suspension.

Huge pressure will be placed on Liverpool on Sunday, and we have already seen them close to buckling in some of their biggest tests. Chelsea has struggled on the road, but with an invigorated squad looking to impress at the end of the season, the visitors may make life hard for Klopp’s men.
