Match Analysis

Man City vs Tottenham

Etihad Stadium

Wednesday 17th April

Kick-off: 20:00

Key stats:

– Tottenham last won at the Etihad in 2016 in a 2-1 win

– Over 2.5 goals in 5 of the last 8 meetings

– Man City have won their last 12 straight home matches scoring 49 goals

– Tottenham have won just three of their last 10 away Champions League matches

– Man City have lost half of their last six home Champions League matches 1-2

Analysis:

It was a case of fine margins last week in North London, as a Son strike edged out a slender 1-0 lead for Tottenham to defend in Manchester this Wednesday.

It could have been all so different. A first-half penalty miss from Aguero set the tone for the rest of the match, with Pep deciding to leave Sane and De Bruyne out of the starting eleven in the first leg of this Champions League quarter-final.

Injuries to Kane and Alli have seen Spurs having to revert back to the side that saw them so successful through a sticky period at the start of 2019. Lucas Moura has hit the ground running once again with a weekend hat-trick against Huddersfield, with Son only playing for seven minutes giving his energetic legs a rest ahead of a daunting trip to the Etihad.

Man City have had very little issue in finding the net at home this season. Their 49 goals in a run of 12 straight wins punctuate the fortress that the Etihad has become under this side, with Tottenham needing to rely on their defensive stability to move into the semi-finals.

If Tottenham score on Wednesday, City will need to find three goals; not the tallest order for a front three likely to comprise of Sterling, Aguero and Sane. The pace of this attack sitting in front of the ingenuity of De Bruyne and Silva will look to stretch the Spurs wing backs – an area of the pitch that Poch has admitted needs strengthening in the summer.

City’s vice-like control over teams on home turf is hard to ignore. If Spurs can get into half-time 0-0 it will be a huge achievement, but you can’t help but feel that Pep would have learnt his lessons from last year’s loss to Liverpool.

Tottenham may score, but City at their rampant best can put four or five past any defence in the world. Just ask Chelsea. If City are to win the quadruple this season they will have to just get over the line on all four fronts. Their loss last week will have been in the preferred match during this mini-run of fixtures against Tottenham.
