Analysis:

With a heavy focus on the quest for a Premier League crown, it’s unclear how prepared Klopp and his Liverpool team will be for a leap back into European waters. A loss in the final to Real Madrid last season was still considered a huge success for the Reds, however, this season they have been stretched looking to fight on more than one front.

Friday night’s 5-0 hammering of Huddersfield was the perfect preparation for a trip to Catalonia. Klopp was able to rest, rotate, and most importantly, get four whole days between matches to prepare for the challenge of Barcelona.

Barcelona notched up a 1-0 home win over Levante on Saturday which confirmed their 26th domestic title. With a luxury of being able to rest their stars in the remaining three league matches, Ernesto Valverde must be brimming with confidence ahead of Wednesday match, with his side coming nicely to the boil at the right time. With just three defeats in their last 35 matches, Barcelona has cruised to another title after a tricky start to the campaign.

Lionel Messi’s incredible form is continuing to blow the most open of football minds. 13 goals in his last 12 matches have enabled him to win the Spanish Golden Boot at a canter. His 34 league goals are followed by 21 from Karim Benzema, punctuating the gulf between himself and the rest of the league.

The narrative will surround Luis Suarez and his emotions surrounding playing against his former side Liverpool. The Uruguayan netted 69 times in 110 apps for the Reds but has kicked on in his decorated career since joining Barcelona.

Liverpool’s defence has stood up to many challenges this season, however, the daunting task of taming the Barca beast is a whole new prospect. The hosts have scored in all but one of their last 42 home matches, with Liverpool showing vulnerabilities on the road in Europe.

Liverpool will always get chances to score. If they can bag an away goal, a 2-1 or 3-1 loss wouldn’t be the end of the world for the visitors; banking on a turnaround at Anfield in a week’s time.
