Match Analysis

Manchester City vs Leicester

Etihad Stadium

Monday 6th May

Kick-off: 20:00

Key stats:

– Leicester have beaten Man City in three of the last four seasons (including this season already)

– Both teams have scored in seven on the last eight meetings

– Man City won this fixture last year 5-1

– Leicester have lost one of their last seven fixtures

– Man City on a run of 12 Premier League wins

Analysis:

Two matches remain in Pep Guardiola’s quest for back-to-back Premier League titles, and with a trip to struggling Brighton on the final day of the season, this Monday night’s test against a positive Leicester side is, arguably, the only hurdle left for City to jump this season.

Elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Tottenham has no doubt concentrated the Man City minds as we close in on another summer. A slender 1-0 win at Burnley last season was ground out by the visitors, with celebrations at full-time emphasizing the task in hand to break down a dogmatic Dyche defence.

Home is where the heart is for this City outfit, winning 18 of their last 19 matches in front of a home crowd; this run extends to 33 in the last 36 – quite a feat.

The visitors, Leicester, have had a mini-revival since Brendan Rodgers took the reins. Their young, athletic side is capable of pressuring the better sides in the league, with a 3-0 dominant win over Arsenal last weekend underlining their strengths. They have the feel of a team of spoilers, with high impact attacks fronted by Jamie Vardy enough to give any defence nightmares.

Their quest for Europa League football is well and truly alive, with just three points separating themselves from Wolves in seventh. Rodgers will be keen to return to European football with the Foxes, with some of the lesser sides feeling the burden of starting the season in late July in an attempt to qualify for the group stages.

I can’t see Leicester rolling over on a nervy Monday night in Manchester. A 2-1 win earlier on in the season at the King Power is proof enough that the Foxes aren’t shy in playing the best in the league, with City taking the three points however it may come.

Expect a scrappy first half, with the quality shining through in the second. City will get over the line, but it’s likely to be by a slender margin.
