Match Analysis
UEFA Nations League, Saturday 8th September
Wembley Stadium, Kick-off: 19:45
Key stats:
– A draw and a win each in their last three meetings
– Both teams have scored once (a 2-2 draw) in their last 9 meetings
– Over 2.5 goals twice in 9 meetings
– Spain won one of their 4 matches at the World Cup (1-0 win against Iran)
– England with two defeats in their last 17 matches (in 90 minutes)
– England and Spain in their UNL group with Croatia.
Analysis:
It’s the return of the Three Lions after an unexpected summer of success at the World Cup; reaching their third ever World Cup semi-final. Spain, in contrast, are starting a new chapter under the guidance of new coach Luis Enrique following Julen Lopetegui’s dramatic exit just days before the start of La Roja’s World Cup campaign.
Injuries for Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana leave a small void in attacking options for Gareth Southgate, although options in Danny Welbeck, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard still remain in final third; two of three will be expected to feature at some point in support of loan striker Harry Kane, who is priced at 17.00 to finish top goal scorer of the UEFA Nations League.
Diego Costa is the only notable absentee from the strong Spain squad who were shocked by Russia in the last sixteen of the World Cup. Isco, Marco Asensio, Suso, Iago Aspas, Alvaro Morata and Rodrigo Moreno offer a multitude of options for Enrique in attack for Spain, with Chelsea duo Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta getting call ups at wing-back.
England have the better over Spain in their 25-match history, however, with Spain winning four out of the last six victories, La Roja’s dominance over the past decade has been clear. With a keep-ball, possession-based philosophy, England will have to be patient against this technical Spanish outfit, looking to use their pace effectively on the counter.
These two sides met just under two years ago at Wembley in a well contested 2-2 draw. England led until the 89th minute with goals from Vardy and Lallana, however, two late Aspas and Isco strikes rescued a draw for the visiting side.
This England side is still green and inexperienced against the powerhouses of International football. A World Cup hangover isn’t quite expected, although a Spanish side looking to impress their new coach is a danger.
The bookies can’t split these two in terms of victory; a double chance bet backing England and a draw shows value at 1.48 with two selections of three covered.
