Match Analysis

Napoli vs Liverpool, Stadio San Paolo
Wednesday 3rd October, Kick-off: 20:00

Key stats:

– Liverpool won this fixture 5-0 in a pre-season friendly
– Liverpool have scored 19 goals already this season
– A 0-0 draw in the only fixture played between these two sides in Naples
– Napoli have lost twice this season; 3-1 to Juventus and 3-0 to Sampdoria both away from home
– Napoli have scored 13 goals so far this season

Analysis:

This is expected to be a real fire-cracker of a Champions League group match. Liverpool got off to the perfect start in beating PSG 3-2 a fortnight ago, however, Napoli had differing fortunes as they struggled to catch fire in a 0-0 away draw against Red Star Belgrade.

Since losing Jorginho in the summer, Napoli’s new coach Carlo Ancelotti has had to reinvent the wheel in Naples. With their free-flowing 4-3-3 system causing devastation last campaign, the Italian coach has reverted to a 4-4-2, using Mertens and Insigne as the two strikers. Zielinski is being played on the left hand side of midfield, with neither Jose Callejon or Marek Hamsik guaranteed a starting place this campaign.

Liverpool have started at a blistering pace this season; a Chelsea sized speed bump has threatened to derail them over the past week. A last minute Daniel Sturridge goal saved a point on their trip to Stamford Bridge, with Klopp’s attention now turning to topping a competitive Group C.

Napoli look as dangerous as ever at home; wins against AC Milan, Fiorentina and Parma at the San Paolo will concern Liverpool as they look to penetrate a potential fortress.

Draws against Spartak Moscow and Sevilla last season showed the Reds frailties on the road in the Champions League, and with a tricky week behind them they may struggle to get out of the traps quickly in Naples.

Mo Salah isn’t quite living up to last year’s high expectations. The Egyptian has only three goals so far this campaign, however, his pace will be crucial in breaching a Napoli defence that look vulnerable in patches.

Ancelotti has plugged a few of Sarri’s holes that would have made this fixture a pure slugfest 12 months ago. That being said, both sides are more than capable of hurting one another.

Goals should follow both of these sides throughout their European adventures.
