Match Analysis

Liverpool vs Man United, Anfield

Sunday 16th December, Kick-off: 16:00

Key stats:

– Liverpool have failed to beat Man United in the Premier League since 2014

– Four draws in their last five meetings in all competitions

– Under 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 7 meetings

– Last two Liverpool-Man United fixtures at Anfield have finished goalless

– Man United won at Anfield last in 2016

Analysis:

Anfield was rocking once again as Klopp masterminded a 1-0 win against a dangerous Napoli; a result that saw them progress in the Champions League.

United’s work was already done, although their 2-1 loss in Valencia looks a worse result now knowing that Juventus would fall to Young Boys; top sport scuppered for Jose.

Sunday’s derby between the two most decorated clubs in English football history has a lot at stake. The visitors are beginning to climb again after a run of awful results, whereas Liverpool see themselves on top of the pile after their best start to a league season in their history – quite astonishingly they are only one point ahead of City.

Joel Matip and Joe Gomez’s injures are of massive concern for Klopp. They have relied on their defensive stubbornness this season rotating the pair; Lovren will now have to step in to partner van Dijk as the Reds look to negate a tricky Christmas period without two of their best defenders.

This news will ignite Mourinho into action. The maverick manager thrives on these occasions, with United’s back against the wall in a daunting fixture. Their price of 6.00 is a damning indictment of their struggles this season.

United have continued to rotate as they look to find the correct pieces to the puzzle that have been dogging Jose. Lukaku is expected to return to the starting eleven with his size and athleticism perfect to challenge Liverpool’s new centre-back pairing.

Salah’s return to form is a problem for the Premier League. He’s beginning to take his chances with more authority than at the start of this campaign – he’s rightfully a short a price to get on the score sheet again on Sunday.

The unders market look tempting if we are to look at recent form. United will set up to frustrate the hosts, with Mourinho famous for accepting draws away to the “Big 6”. Liverpool may be able to break through late, but the more they commit, the more open they become to the pace of Martial and Rashford.
