Match Analysis

Everton vs Tottenham, Goodison Park
Sunday 23rd December, Kick-off: 16:00

Key stats:

– Tottenham won last season’s two fixtures by an aggregate score of 7-0

– Everton haven’t won this fixture since 2012 (11 fixtures)

– Over 2.5 goals in the last three matches

– Everton without a win in their last four matches this season

– Tottenham the only side without a draw in the Premier League

– Three of the last five meetings at Goodison Park have ended in draws

Analysis:

Speculation over the future of Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has been rife this week following Jose Mourinho’s departure from Old Trafford on Tuesday. The Argentinean is rumoured to be high on United’s wishlist for their next manager in the summer.

This won’t distract the ever professional and attentive manager who travels to Goodison Park looking to keep the pressure on the top two.

Spurs trail Liverpool at the top of the league by just six points, and with a favourable run of fixtures over the festive period, Sunday’s visitors will be searching for three points to keep up with the pace.

Everton are playing well but struggling for results. Richarlison leading the line has had mixed results so far, with their defence letting them down in matches they should be winning. Sitting in eighth, the Toffees find themselves embroiled in a battle for seventh spot with a host of other sides; Silva will be tasked in breaking into that top six in the next couple of seasons.

Yerry Mina was a standout signing for Everton in the summer. The Colombian is a constant threat from set pieces, however, there are calls for a return of a defensive partnership that looked solid at the start of the season. Keane and Zouma compliment each other well and could prove to be the answer to their current defensive issues.

Tottenham aren’t blowing teams away this season but are consistently doing enough to take three points from tricky situations. It won’t be a walk in the park this Sunday, but it’s the kind of challenge that Pochettino thrives on.

Both teams will be expected to score in a fixture that rarely disappoints. Spurs’ grit in these tough assignments shouldn’t be underrated – they should pass again, by the narrowest of margins.
