Match Analysis

Liverpool vs Arsenal, Anfield

Saturday 29th December, Kick-off: 17:30

Key stats:

  • Last two meetings have finished in draws
  • Arsenal not won at Anfield since 2012
  • Liverpool still without defeat in the league this season after half the matches
  • Over 2.5 goals in five of the last six
  • Both teams have scored in five of the last six

Analysis:

It’s crunch time for Liverpool as we reach the end of 2018. Klopp’s side have a commanding lead at the top of the Premier League after Man City’s recent stumbles, however, how the German copes with being the ‘hunted’ will be an interesting spectacle.

Liverpool have won their last seven matches in all competitions, and with just one draw (to Man City) and one loss (to Chelsea in the League Cup) it looks like Anfield is becoming the fortress of old for this adaptable Liverpool squad.

Adaptable is a crucial word. Mane, Salah and Firmino were Liverpool’s biggest and only threat last season, however, with the addition of players such as Shaqiri, Fabinho and Keita, Klopp can adapt his sides to benefit against certain opposition.

Arsenal’s defensive frailties have reared their ugly head once again in recent weeks. Sure, going forward they look a completely different side under Emery, but with just one clean sheet in their last twelve league outings, it’s a concern coming to Anfield with the form Salah is showing.

Getting in behind defences is the Egyptian’s best asset; expect Salah to find the net on Saturday as the Gunners struggle to keep track of the movement off the ball he can provide. Salah has scored twelve league goals this season, with eight of them being the opener.

This fixture usually means goals. There have been 38 in the previous nine matches, and with tired legs and stretched personnel over the festive period, expect this trend to continue at Anfield. Liverpool may have only conceded seven goals this season, but one of them was to Arsenal at the Emirates; Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is playing well enough to find the net on Saturday, albeit in potential defeat.

Liverpool look ruthless in front of goal at the moment. I can’t see the visitors limiting the hosts to less than two goals – are Arsenal capable of scoring two at Anfield? Probably not.
