Analysis:

The Bundesliga is back after its winter break, with a focus on Bayern Munich’s Houdini mission to retain the title the constant narrative expected until May. Bayern’s start to the season featured unexpected hiccups at the hands of unexpected opponents. Dropped points to the likes of Augsburg, Hertha and M’gladbach saw them linger outside the top four towards the end of October; a loss to Dortmund a month later emphasised the struggle they will endure this season chasing down the league leaders.

The gap is only six points, but with Dortmund tasting defeat just once this season it’s hard to imagine too many opportunities for the Bavarians to narrow the gap with any true conviction.

Movements in the January window have dominated the headlines, with the constant pursuit of Chelsea’s teenage sensation Callum Hudson-Odoi a controversial topic; Alvaro Morata has also been tipped to join the German champions on a possible loan deal. Getting their business down early seems a philosophy at the heart of Bayern in attempt to get a head start on the competition in the summer.

Injuries have once again been at the forefront of Bayern news this season. Corentin Tolisso’s ACL tear in September looks to have affected the sides attacking threat more than expected, with James Rodriguez, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery all suffering from spells out of the team in recent weeks.

Hoffenheim enjoyed a stubborn run up until the winter break. Six draws on the spin in the league tends to insinuate troubled form, however, with Schalke, Hertha and M’gladbach amongst the sides they’ve taken a point from, there are positives for Nagelsmann to draw from with them currently sitting in seventh.

Their home form will be of concern as we enter the second half of the season, with only three wins being recorded in front of their home support. Draw specialists, perhaps, but these points have to start being turned into three if they are to have any European aspirations come the end of the season.

Hoffenheim have won this fixture the past two seasons, however, this one feels a little different this time around. Munich will look to continue their fine form going into Christmas, and a win in Hoffenheim – despite their injuries – is well within their reach. It may be decided by the finest of margins.
