Match Analysis

Chelsea vs Tottenham, Stamford Bridge

Thursday 24th January, Kick-off: 19:45

Key stats:

– Tottenham have won the last three meetings between two sides

– Semi-final first leg finished 1-0 to Tottenham two weeks ago at Wembley

– Chelsea have scored more than two goals just once in 18 matches (against PAOK)

– Over 2.5 goals in six of the last eight meetings

– Tottenham achieved their first win at Stamford Bridge last season for 28 years

– This is Tottenham’s second game in a run of eight to be played in London

Analysis:

It’s been a bad week for Chelsea. Their 2-0 loss at the Emirates in the London derby underlined the problems Sarri is having implementing his philosophy at the club, questioning the players’ mentality and fighting spirit on the pitch. Higuain is on the verge of making the move to West London with Morata moving back to Spain; unfortunately for the hosts, the issues the Blues are having may not be confined to their strike force.

The 1-0 win for Spurs at Wembley in the first leg of this semi-final was overshadowed by VAR and Harry Kane’s shoulder/toe being potentially offside. These issues won’t arise on Thursday with the World Cup Golden Boot winner sidelined until March with an ankle injury; Son’s absence due to the Asian Cup will also see Tottenham’s squad stretched again, with Llorente and Lamela likely to get the nod in the advanced roles.

Pochettino needs a trophy on his Tottenham CV. Taking a lead into this second leg – albeit it a narrow one – will give the Argentine confidence that he can guide his side into a final against Man City. Tottenham’s last piece of silverware was the League Cup in 2008 when they toppled Chelsea 2-1 in the final.

It’s hard to see Chelsea scoring a bag full on Thursday. One could be enough to see them through providing they won a penalty shootout, however, Tottenham’s free-flowing style will always lead to chances. A last minute winner at Fulham on Sunday by Harry Winks will work wonders for morale this week in the Spurs camp.

It will be narrow once again at the Bridge on Thursday. A Hazard-inspired Chelsea can advance, but their current form doesn’t suggest they’ll be completely up for the challenge. Tottenham’s price for an away win is very tempting considering Chelsea need to score – if they over-commit they’ll get stung.
