– Everton have won two of the three previous meetings at Goodison Park
– Both teams have scored in five of the previous six
– Over 2.5 goals in four of the previous six
– There have been 86 goals in Man City’s 25 league matches this campaign
– Everton with only six home wins in the league all season
Analysis:
It’s crunch time for Man City. Their season is likely to be defined by the way they negate some tricky fixtures in February, with a trip to Goodison Park this Wednesday the second of the big tests this month.
They passed their weekend test with flying colours as they dissected an Arsenal defence with relative ease in a 3-1 win at the Etihad; Sergio Aguero’s form looks red hot with another hat trick to add to his career in Sky Blue.
Everton and Marco Silva are under a lot of pressure from the Goodison faithful. They are conceding bucket loads of goals from set pieces and continue to drop points against underwhelming opposition. Their 3-1 loss to Wolves at the weekend emphasized their struggles especially at the back; Tosun looks unlikely to fire them out of trouble at a considerable rate.
So where will City have their successes at Goodison Park? They are be no means a tall side, so the usual focus on set pieces against a Silva side will probably be ignored, however, their constant barrage of possession will no doubt penetrate Pickford’s goal, with the Toffee’s having the ninth worst defence in the league.
The thing is, Marco Silva revels in these sort of tests. He sees his Everton side as better and more capable than they are, and a positive result against a City side that are conceding goals will do wonders for the support he’ll receive.
This fixture screams of goals. Goals at both ends, continuing the run of overs and BTTS bets in previous meetings. City should scrape through, but as they continue to keep the pressure on Liverpool, nerves will creep in. City have been striking early in recent matches – worth noting with Everton’s shaky defence.
