Match Analysis

Man City vs Chelsea, Etihad Stadium

Sunday 10th February 2019, Kick-off: 16:00

Key stats:

– Both teams have scored in two of their last seven meetings

– Man City have won three of the last four meetings

– City are back on top of the league having played once more than Liverpool

– City have scored 68 goals in 26 matches, 43 of them have come at the Etihad

– Chelsea have scored one goal in their last four away matches; losing the last three

Analysis:

City are back ticking again, like the metronomic clock they are in the Premier League. Their hiccups at the hands of Newcastle, Leicester and Crystal Palace are a distance memory for Pep and his team of champions, as they continue to chase down Liverpool.

City currently sit top of the league by virtue of playing one more fixture than Liverpool; a win for the Reds this weekend would see them keep their three point gap over City coming into Sunday’s fixture at the Etihad.

Bernardo’s reintroduction to the City starting eleven has gone unnoticed. The Portuguese international recycles the ball so well in midfield, drifting out to the right side of the pitch proving untraceable in his quest for pockets of space in and around the opposition’s penalty area. Rotation has been a key component of Guardiola’s City, but I wonder if he will continue to stick with his favoured eleven more often as we approach crunch time in the four competitions City are fighting for.

Chelsea continue to confuse their fans with a long spectrum of performances. A 4-0 loss to Bournemouth was followed by a 5-0 demolition of doomed Huddersfield. Higuain’s brace will be enough to already convince the Chelsea faithful that the curse of the number 9 has been lifted; unfortunately, the road ahead will be tough for the Argentine.

Chelsea have struggled against City more often than not in recent efforts. Ignoring their 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge before Christmas, trips to the Etihad tend to end in frustration, with Chelsea getting drowned in City possession unable to find the net.

Pep knows that he needs to keep his foot on the Premier League pedal. Yes, the Champions League is just around the corner, but with Liverpool stuttering, now is the time to put a string of convincing wins together. Sarri’s Chelsea have gone over 300 Premier League minutes without finding an away goal. I wouldn’t be surprised if this continued on Sunday afternoon.
