Match Analysis

Man United vs PSG, Old Trafford

Tuesday 12th February, Kick-off: 20:00

Key stats:

– Man United are still undefeated under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer; just one draw accompanying 10 wins.

– PSG have won six of their last seven

– PSG have scored in their last 37 fixtures

– Over 2.5 goals in six of United’s last seven home fixtures

– Over 2.5 goals in PSG’s last six

– Both teams have scored in six of Solskjaer’s eleven matches in charge

Analysis:

A real belief is swarming around Old Trafford as we turn into 2019, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continuing to prove priceless in the Red Devils’ quest for silverware this season. The Norwegian claims to have just deployed the “basics” in his revival of Manchester United, with players being trusted to play with a smile of their faces, fearless of failure.

He also alluded to small tactical changes that have enabled them to climb back into the top four; a feat that seemed impossible at the start of December last year. The task ahead of him is the biggest yet since his appointment; PSG have looked destined to go deep into the Champions League over the past few seasons, with a talent littered squad of stars playing at their peaks.

One player missing from Tuesday’s match will be Edison Cavani. PSG’s dangerous striker will miss the trip to Manchester having suffered a thigh injury in Saturday’s win over Bordeaux. The 31-year-old has netted 21 goals in 25 games this season, with his presence upfront likely to be a huge miss. Neymar is still out with a broken metatarsal, with Veratti and Meunier’s absence also expected.

Coach Thomas Tuchel has described his team as needing a “Plan D” on Tuesday with so many omissions. Maybe the timing is right for Solskjaer’s United to take on the wounded French champions. Di Maria and Draxler are expected to join Mbappe in PSG’s frontline.

United don’t have such problems. Rashford and Martial were given rests this weekend as they strolled to a 3-0 win over a languid Fulham. The youngster is expected to lead the line, with Sanchez and Lukaku ready to be used from the bench for added firepower.

Considering it’s the home leg for United, nothing but a positive result will be required from the home faithful. A 0-0 draw is never the worst result for the home leg of a Champions League tie, but the hosts are playing too well not to cause PSG’s defence problems. It could get cagey at times, but PSG always tend to find a way to score.
